Endorsements
BWWAP researches and interviews candidates running for a range of public offices that have an impact on Black women’s health. This includes federal, state, and influential local offices like L.A. County Supervisors and District Attorneys. Below are our endorsements for the November 2024 General Election. These candidates have proven to be courageous leaders who are committed to improving the overall health and wellbeing of Black women, girls and communities. They are the progressive champions and fierce advocates that we need to fight for a society where our communities are supported –– one of equity and justice.
FEDERAL
CONGRESS – U.S. Congressional districts, also known as electoral districts, are divisions of a larger administrative region that represent the population of a region in the larger congressional body. The U.S. House of Representatives, along with the Senate, make and pass federal laws, introduce bills and resolutions, offer amendments and serve on committees that enable members to develop specialized knowledge on the matters under that committee’s jurisdiction
STATE ASSEMBLY
The California State Assembly is the lower house of the California State Legislature with the upper house being the California State Senate. The Assembly forms the legislative branch of the California state government and works alongside the Governor of California to create laws and establish a state budget.
SENATE
The California Senate has an additional responsibility that the Assembly does not share. It is responsible for the confirmation of hundreds of the officials nominated by the Governor for service in the executive branch – which gives the Senate an extra “check and balance” duty in the way that the Legislature’s laws are enforced.
LOCAL
L.A. County District Attorney
The District Attorney is known as the Chief Prosecutor and is a powerful position in our criminal justice system. Not only do they decide who and what gets criminalized in our communities, they are also able to determine if those charged with protecting and serving our needs are held accountable when they misuse their power.
CITY COUNCIL
Councilmembers are a city’s governing body. They wield a great deal of power and play a vital role in making decisions that affect our daily lives including but not limited to: how much we pay in property taxes; whether more money will go to city police hiring and expenses; and how much city budget funding goes to services such as affordable housing, renter protection and assistance, senior services, and street and sidewalk safety.
